As we age the collagen in our skin gradually wears away which can cause a loss of volume and the skin to crease or wrinkle. Other environmental factors play their part as well such as UV damage from the sun, poor diet and dehydration, alcohol, smoking and sunbeds.
There are a number of treatments suitable for Wrinkle Reduction; Sculptra®, Dermal Fillers but probably the most commonly known and popular treatment is "Botox®". Botox® is a brand name for Botulinum Toxin Type A produced by Allergan®.
Botulinum Toxin Type A is predominantly used in the upper part of the face; forehead lines, frown lines, crows feet and eyebrow lift. This treatment can help soften and smooth deep wrinkles. The treatment is also suitable for fine lines; it can help prevent these lines from becoming deeper.
However it can also be used on nasal scrunch (also known as "bunny lines") under the eyes, chin and neck area. It can also help with excessive sweating.
The Consultation
During your consultation you will discuss your areas of concern. Dr Hamlet will discuss with you the form of treatment or combination of treatments which would be most suitable for you.
The Treatment
Following on from your consultation you will have your facial muscles examined; this is to ascertain where the Botulinum Toxin will be injected. The injections will be administered by a very small needle with a very low dose of Botulinum Toxin. You should not experience any discomfort, no anaesthesia is necessary. However if you prefer ice can be used to numb the area to make sure you are comfortable during treatment. The treatment will take about 10-15 minutes, half an hour maximum following on from your consultation.
How Does It Work?
Botulinum Toxin Type A will weaken the muscles in your face that you use for certain facial expressions such as frowning or squinting. The muscle that has been injected will block the signal from the nerve therefore stopping the muscle from contracting.
When Will I See The Results, How Long Will It Last?
You should start to see the results seven to ten days after your treatment. The results will last up to three to four months, dependent on each person's response.
